ORIGIN
Mulberry silk often referred to as the “Queen of Silks,” is the most coveted and luxurious silk in the world. Its journey begins with the delicate cultivation of Bombyx mori silkworms, which feed exclusively on the leaves of the white mulberry tree. This strict diet is what gives mulberry silk its unparalleled smoothness, strength, and luminous sheen.
Unlike wild silks such as Tussah or Eri, which are produced by silkworms feeding on various plants, mulberry silk is the result of controlled sericulture, ensuring uniformity in fiber quality. The silkworms are reared in pristine, climate controlled environments to prevent impurities and inconsistencies in the silk threads.
PRODUCTION
The production of mulberry silk is an extraordinarily labour-intensive process, requiring meticulous attention at every stage. Farmers carefully monitor the silkworms for 25-28 days as they consume Mulberry leaves and grow. Each worm spins a cocoon in 3-8 days, producing a single, unbroken filament that can stretch up to 1.6 Kilometres when unravelled.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
The cocoons are hand selected at peak quality, typically before the silkworm emerges to avoid breaking the filament. Reeling the Silk is the most skilled step. Skilled artisans hand reel multiple filaments usually 5-8 together to form a single, ultra-fine silk thread. This process, known as “throwing,” requires immense precision as any inconsistency can weaken the fabric.
The silk yarn is then woven into fabric using traditional looms. The finest mulberry silk undergoes additional degumming, removing residual sericin to enhance its softness and luster. Total Labor Estimated for Producing 1 kilogram of Mulberry Silk requires approximately 5,500 silkworms and 250 hours of skilled labour, making it one of the most resource-intensive textiles in the world.
PROPERTIES
Mulberry silk is the gold standard of all silks, prized for its longer, stronger fibres and continuous filament structure, which makes it far more durable than shorter staple wild silks. Renowned for its unmatched softness and natural pearlescent sheen, it glides effortlessly across the skin with a luxuriously smooth feel.
Naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and mould, mulberry silk is also beautifully temperature regulating, wicking away moisture to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
Only 1% of the world’s silk achieves Grade 6A, the highest classification, typically reserved for haute couture and the finest luxury bedding. For true connoisseurs, mulberry silk is the ultimate indulgence, a timeless expression of centuries of craftsmanship, nature’s perfection, and an uncompromising dedication to luxury.
